Tournaments...TOURNAMENT 2008 - Saturday 14th June 2008Although the weather forecasters had been predicting rain only a few drops actually landed on what was a great days Mini-Soccer action. At Under 7's level the 'A' teams of Chesterfield Town and Greenhill JFC dominated Group 'A' and both reached the semi-final stages without conceding a goal. Group 'B' was headed by Woodhouse 'A' who won all five of their games with Greenhill JFC 'B' taking the runners-up spot. As so often happens, both group winners were eliminated at the semi-final stages as Greenhill 'B' overcame the home club 1-0 whilst Greenhill 'A' overcame Woodhouse in a penalty shoot-out. An all Greenhill affair in the final guaranteed that the trophies presented by Joe Roberts and Councillor Mark Higginbottom headed up the Dronfield-by-pass to Sheffield. In the Under 8's section despite ADAS Hawks not conceding a goal in Group 'A' they were pipped in the table by Abbey Lane 'B' after both clubs had dominated the section. Abbey Lane 'A' won Group 'B' by one point from Worksop Boys and Girls Club 'B'. With both semi-finals ending 2-2 Abbey Lane held their nerve in penalty shoot-outs to ensure, as in last years Under 7's, both of their teams met in the final and thus take the Sharon Blank Trophy. It soon became apparent that Group 'A' in the Under 9's was the tournament's 'Group of Death' with Halesowen based Halas Hawks taking the eye. Thorncliffe Juniors 'B', however, who play in the Sheffield and District Junior Sunday League's 'A' Division, topped the group from Ecclesall 'B' on goal difference. Chesterfield Town 'A' won every game to top Group 'B' with Thorncliffe 'A' pipping West Hallam Tigers on goal difference to claim the second spot. The two Thorncliffe sides met in the semi-final with the 'A' side winning a penalty shoot-out to set up a final against Ecclesall 'B' who beat the home club 2-1 in the other semi-final. Thorncliffe 'A' then showed their class in the final with a 3-0 win over Ecclesall. Having won the competition at both Under 7's and Under 8's levels this was an impressive hat-trick of wins for the Rotherham based club, who were presented with the Tony Rogers Trophy by Councillor Rogers himself. In the Under 10's age group Skegby Colts won their first six games to take their place in the final. Here they played Chesterfield Town 'A' would they had already beaten 2-1 in the group stages. The home club upset the form book in the final winning 2-0 to give new manager Richard Copestake his first silverware. Mention in this age group must also go to Wingerworth 'B' and last year's winners Burbage United for making the semi-finals. |
