Tournaments...2008 TOURNAMENT DATE IS ON SATURDAY 14TH JUNE 2008 ENTRY FORMS AVAILABLE FROM TIM SADLER (01246 277325)THIRD ANNUAL MINI-SOCCER TOURNAMENT - SUNDAY 17TH JUNE 2007 After a week of wet weather we were grateful to Chesterfield Borough Council for giving us the green light to stage our tournament at Stand Road Park. The good sized crowds were entertained with some excellent football and this combined with some good sportsmanship ensured that there wasn't a yellow yard in sight during 132 games of Mini-Soccer. ![]() At Under 7's level the surprise package was Chesterfield Town's Under 6's team, who won three of their qualifying games and almost reached the qualifying stages. Abbey Lane's teams both topped their groups and were kept apart in the semi-final stages. Here Abbey Lane's 'A' team came from behind to beat Chesterfield Town 'B' 2-1 and Abbey Lane's 'B' team overcame Worksop Boys Club to ensure that Abbey Lane collected both the winners and runners-up trophies.
Abbey Lane Under 7's Winners and Runners Up Thorncliffe made a good start in the Under 8's age group and their 'A' side topped Group 'A'. Without conceding a goal Chesterfield Town's 'A' team topped Group 'B' to set up a semi-final against Throstles 'B'. Town played well to beat the Sheffield side 4-0 to set up the anticipated final with Thorncliffe, who had beaten Throstles 'A' in the other semi-final. The excellent Thorncliffe side, winners of last years Under 7's section, won a close final and collected the Sharon Blank Trophy, which was kindly presented by Sharon.

Chesterfield Town Under 8's Runners Up Teams from three different leagues contested the Under 9's section, where unknown quantities Buxton Falcons and Skegby Colts both started well. It was Chesterfield Town 'A' though, without conceding a goal, who won Group 'A'. Last years winners Ecclesall Rangers 'A' topped Group 'B' with Chesterfield Town 'B', who had lost their first two games, clinching the runners-up spot before defeating their 'A' side 2-1 in the semi-final. In the other semi-final Buxton beat Ecclesall on Golden Goal after neither side could manage a goal in normal time. With both group winners eliminated at the semi-final stage it was Buxton, with another Golden Goal who took the Tony Rogers Trophy beating the host club.

Chesterfield Town Under 9's Runners Up Few goals were scored in Group 'A' of the Under 10's competition but it was Somersall Rangers Yellows who topped the group from Holmewood and Heath with the home club finishing third. Manor Rangers had looked the best side in this age group and they duly won Group 'B'. Once again though both group winners were eliminated at the semi-final stages where Norton Lees, winners of last years Under 9's section, beat Somersall with Holmewood and Heath overcoming Manor Rangers after an exciting penalty shoot out. A late goal gave Norton Lees a 1-0 victory in the final and with it the Friends of Stand Road Park Trophy, which was presented by Ian Sutherland.

Holmewood and Heath Under 10's Runners Up FRIENDS OF STAND ROAD PARK GALA DAY - SATURDAY 14th JULY 2007 The heavy rain that threatend the day relented and the sun came out as twenty one teams took part in the football tournament, which covered four age groups. At each of the age groups teams played each other once on a league basis with the top two teams playing off in a final. At Under 8's level Chesterfield Town's 'B' Team and the two Eckington Boys teams made the running and it was no surprise to see Chesterfield Town 'B' taking on Eckington Boys 'A' in the final, which Eckington won by a 1-0 margin. Credit must be given to Arkwright Community in this age group because with a good number of six year-olds they never gave up against some good opposition. The qualifying stages of the Under 11's age group were very competetive with Tapton Juniors and Wingerworth Villa prominent. After finishing first and second in the Rowsley League's Division 2 last season the teams again took the top two spots. Despite holding group winners Tapton to a 1-1 draw Chesterfield Town struggled to get going on the day. In a close and tense final the Villa took the winners trophies back to Wingerworth courtesy of a 1-0 win. Old Whittington JFC dominated the qualifying group of the Under 12's section, winning every game without conceding a goal. They met Chesterfield Town 'B' in the final which could not produce a single goal even after extra time. Town struck the better penalties in the shoot out though to claim the win. In the Under 13's age group Chesterfield Town had mixed fortunes in the group stages. The 'A' Team won every game to win the group whilst their 'B' Team came bottom of the group. In between this it was very close with Buxton Bears edging out Brimwood and Coney Green to face the home club in the final. Town had beaten Buxton 3-1 in the last of the group games and they repeated the win with a 3-0 scoreline in the final giving new manager Trevor Higgingbottom his first silverware. A massive thanks must go to Paul Leverton of PK Electrical for sponsoring all of the trophies and to his father Mick for kindly presenting the trophies. |
