The
event provided our Under 6's
team, with their first experience of playing football against
teams from other clubs and the home club performed well in 'non
-competitive' matches against other teams from Beighton Magpies
and the Derby outfit Mackworth Saint Francis.

At
Under 7's level the competition
attracted 15 teams many of who were of the highest standard. Although
the matches were 'non-competitive' two teams, namely Chesterfield
Town 'B' and Greenhill 'B' were asked to play an invitation match
were the winning team collected the Neighbourhood Pride Trophy. |

The Under
8's section, again 'non-competitive, got underway in the
sun during the afternoon and spectators were treated to some excellent
football. Mackworth Saint Francis and Mexborough Main Street were
playing some of this great football but the organisers asked the home
club's 'A' and 'B' teams to play an invitation match for the Sharon
Blank Trophy and those who witnessed saw more quality from two well
matched teams.

At
Under 9's level the two Sheffield
Wednesday Young Owls teams topped their respective groups and they
looked a good bet to meet in the final. The Owls 'A' team were beaten
on penalties in the semi-final by Worksop Town 'A' though whilst
the surprise package of the tournament Inter Priory pulled off a
shock to beat the Owls 'B' team in the other semi-final. Inter who
had travelled from Scunthorpe to take part deservedly went home
with the Tony Rogers Trophy after beating Worksop 2-0 in the final.

The
Under 10's age group event took
place in the afternoon and as in other previous years Abbey Lane,
who play in the 'A' Division of the Sheffield & District Junior
Sunday League, dominated the proceedings with their sides winning
both groups. Their 'B' team overcame fellow Sheffield side Norton
Lees 'B' in one semi-final and in the other Chesterfield Town's Chad
Mansfield League team put up a great display going down only on penalties
against Abbey Lane's 'A' side. An all Abbey Lane final saw them go
up the Dronfield by-pass with the Friends of Stand Road Park trophy.
In four years of entering the tournament this very same Abbey Lane
team has not only lifted the trophy on each occasion but had both
teams reach the final, which given the quality of the opposition,
is a remarkable achievement. |
